As the National Hurricane Center continues to monitor Tropical Storm Fay off the Florida coast and its probable growth into Hurricane Fay, people are logging on in their millions to the National Hurricane Center website for the latest updates. From residents of the targeted areas to family members looking to see if their loved ones are affected, the website is experiencing a massive insurge of hits. So what’s the story behind the life-saving and increasingly important information at the National Hurricane Center?

The National Hurricane Center offers visual info for storms.
Information is key. The most obvious reason for the importance of the National Hurricane Center is that it offers instantaneous information to anyone logging onto their site. As soon as you open their homepage, you’re greeted with a visual graph of weather conditions in both the Eastern Pacific and Atlantic.
At the moment the Atlantic opens first, with highlighted areas for key locations under threat from severe weather. Hover your mouse over the encircled area and you’ll get a pop-up box with further information on the severity of the weather warning. As I type, the coast of Florida is described as High Alert.
As well as the visual aspect, the National Hurricane Center website also offers invaluable information from the Public Advisory, offering advice and updates on the latest status of the warning (in this case, advising of the time that Tropical Storm/Hurricane Fay will make the Florida landmass).
Knowledge saves lives. While knowing about the severity of an incoming storm can help residents evacuate if necessary, the National Hurricane Center ensures that people can also have the best possible preparation for hurricanes or severe weather, thanks to the Hurricane Preparedness options.
Learning everything from having a plan in place in case of severe weather, to the differences between storm surges, tornadoes, high winds, hurricanes and more, it’s a veritable goldmine of facts and information that could save more than just your property.
As Tropical Storm Fay edges closer to Hurricane Fay status and anyone not affected by it offers prayers for the safety of those in its path, organizations like the National Hurricane Center show just how technology should be used. In an age where technology is blamed for lower education standards and corruption of kids, it’s heartening to see the National Hurricane Center prove otherwise.
My best wishes to the people of Florida and surrounding areas.
